Sounds loopy, but society has done mastered one thing, chocolate. Chocolate dates back to approximately 1100 BC when it’s earliest use was recorded. It comes from many raw and processed foods produced from seeds of the tropical cacao tree. Cultivated for at least three millennia, today Cacoa provides tremendous choice in countless makes and models of chocolate and finding your favorite could take the rest of your life! Hey nobody said you had to declare a favorite, just enjoy them all!

A rewarding experience may be the “hunt” alone for your favorite chocolate, or so it seems. Morelli’s ice cream parlour at Harrods in London is famous around the world for it’s innovative and creative ice creams.

Gino Soldan has worked there for 18 years and is absolutely passionate about ice cream. However he rarely gives interviews to the press so it was something of a coup to get him to agree to talk about his work.

The following quotes come from the excellent ice-cream-recipes blog.

Gino believes that ice cream is not just a dessert and explained how he was already experimenting with unusual ice cream flavors several years ago. He produced a number of new ice creams combining savoury and sweet flavors which proved very popular. These included:

Pear ice cream with Gorgonzola
parmesan and honey ice cream
feta cheese and yellow pepper cream – to be served with a grilled vegetable platter
olive ice cream – to be served with a cheese platter
tomato sorbet – to be served with gazpacho soup

Gino then prepared a number of new flavours to reflect a typically British menu. Flavours one doesn’t usually associate with ice cream.

Yorkshire Pudding Ice Cream
Sausage and Mash Ice Cream
Pork Pie Ice Cream
Cheddar Cheese Ice Cream
Cornish Pasty Ice Cream
Clotted Cream Ice Cream
Lancashire Hotpot Ice Cream
Eccles Cake Ice Cream
Worcestershire Sauce Ice Cream
Haggis Ice Cream
Shortbread Ice Cream
Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps Ice Cream
Black Pudding Ice Cream
Stottie Cake Ice Cream
Haslet Ice Cream
Red Leicester Cheese Ice Cream
Wensleydale Cheese flavoured ice cream

Arbroath Smokie Ice Cream
Welsh Rarebit Ice Cream
Kendal Mint Cake Ice Cream

You can read the full article on the ice cream recipes blog.

Once in Harrods there is so much more to see and do than enjoying the pleasures of Gino’s ice cream creations. Harrods has over 1 million square feet of selling space and over 330 departments. So that should allow plenty of opportunity for window shopping :-)

Kids are frequently fascinated with cooking, sometimes at a very young age. This attraction can be encouraged with all the realistic play cooking toys available, paired with a great imagination.

Many popular toy maker brands have created miniature kitchens with plastic versions of many kitchen staples. You’ll see just about anything, from frying pans to kettles, and condiments to hamburgers. Pretending to cook is a great learning experience for little ones who enjoy the culinary arts in their mini kitchens.

yummy dessrts and recipes teaching kids to cookThe easiest way for kids to get cooking is to start with an Easy Bake oven. Just ask generations of little girls who dreamed of creating a host of tasty and sugary delights right in their bedrooms or play houses. Helping out with dinner preparations was more fun than work. Actually, cooking was fast and easy with the additional helpers. There was no shortage of ways to help out, and if you were baking goodies you always got to lick the spoon.

Lots of kids like to play around in the kitchen occasionally. But there are some who develop a true aptitude early on for the culinary arts. Well beyond the ability to sprinkle coloured sugar on top of iced cookies.

It can be fun and easy for these little cooks to learn how to prepare different foods. They are often interested in the whole meal, and not just dessert. Who knows, they might get more pleasure out of learning to cook than they do from playing video games.

Many of the cookbooks and videos that are hitting the shelves nowadays are geared towards children with lots of fun and easy to cook recipes. It might come as a surprise, but not all of these tasty recipes are loaded with sugary and fattening ingredients.

Let your child plan the dinner menu one night, and play the assistant to your little chef. You could be pleasantly surprised when you find out that many of these recipes are quite healthy.

It’s essential that you are very aware of what your kids are up to in the kitchen. A sturdy step stool may be better than a chair when they want to be able to see over the counter. An adult needs to be in charge when dishes and pans are placed in the oven and when they’re removed, and also when anything’s being cooked on the stove top.

Teach your kids about the possible dangers of the kitchen. They not only need to know safety procedures, they must be taught what to do when an accident causes injury. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to your kids’ safety in the kitchen.

yummy desserts and recipes Japanese Knives
While the usual wedding gifts are intended to start a young couple on the path to being domestically self-sufficient, most people don’t consider looking past the gift registry at a department store for something that is more special.

Even though knives from department stores and big box retailers are extremely low quality, knives (in German: Küchenmesser) are a common gift for newlyweds. Great chefs have known about the importance of high quality tools for a long time. Now, because of the availability of high-quality knives from Japan, the home chef can have the same high quality tool as the professional chef.

Few people look beyond the usual mundane wedding presents at department stores to get the happy couple something that bit more special. Higher quality cooking supplies often result in higher quality food products, and chefs who know this fully embrace the recent revolution in high quality foreign cook ware.

For anyone that loves to cook (in German: kochen), or for the newly married couple that intends to embark on the adventure of learning to cook together, finer knives mean finer results. Why settle for inexpensive knife sets which are made from stamped metal, when it is possible to own quality Japanese chef’s knives forged from the finest carbon steel which are more balanced and have edges that stay sharp. Both professional chefs and amateur cooks appreciate the high quality of such Japanese kitchen knife brands as Hattori, Shun, and Global, which continue to receive awards and accolades around the world.

Giving knives, e.g. Japanese Haiku Messer Knives, is the perfect wedding gift that will show to be true memorabilia. In addition to their high degree of durability and reliability, quality Japanese chef’s knives are quite attractive as well.

Houseware items, kitchen appliances, and other functional gifts for starting a home often make up many of the items newlyweds will recieve on their wedding day. However, Japanese chef’s knives are appealing to the eye and hand and they can be passed down from generation to generation making them a perfect wedding gift from a parent to a child.

Why Cooking Lessons for Children is such a Good Idea

Cooking Reviews, Cooking tips, Food, Recipes

Children love doing what adults do. Cook a lot at home? Then your kids will want to cook too. Or at least do their version of cooking. It’s the ideal situation for setting up some cooking lessons at home. And your kids won’t even know they’re learning. For them, it will be more like a [...]

Children love doing what adults do. Cook a lot at home? Then your kids will want to cook too. Or at least do their version of cooking. It’s the ideal situation for setting up some cooking lessons at home. And your kids won’t even know they’re learning. For them, it will be more like a game.

Young children love getting their hands into sticky mixtures. Making muffins? Let your children pour in the ingredients. Let them do the stirring – with their hands, if you can stand it. You’ll be giving them valuable cooking lessons in how different textures feel, how different smells relate to the food we eat. You’ll be stimulating their senses and arousing their curiosity. And you’ll even be helping them develop their fine motor skills. That amounts to quite a lot more than a cooking lesson!

When your children are a bit older, let them measure out the different ingredients. Their cooking lessons could include counting out the number of teaspoonsful of sugar you add to the cake mixture. They can learn about units of weight and volume by actually weighing flour and pouring milk into a measuring jug. They’ll see how the number relate to the quantities they can see. And they’ll be able to taste the effect of different quantities of the ingredients they add. This might prove to be a valuable cooking lesson when they’re older.

Finally, when your children are learning to read and write, they can read through simple recipes themselves. Again, this is more than just a cooking lesson. They’ll be able to see how the nouns relate to objects, and actions to the processes of cooking food.

Along the way, they’ll be learning how to manage their workspace and their time. Cooking can be quite managment intensive. Many cooking lessons focus on managing a kitchen – how to manage your time by doing everything in the most logical order; your space by cleaning up as you go along. And they’ll also be learning the basics of food storage and kitchen hygiene.

Children learn all these cooking lessons at home while they’re having fun. Not a lecture to be heard. All hands on. all with tangible results that everyone can enjoy. And who knows, maybe they’ll soon be making delicious food for you and the rest of the family. Now that has to be worth a few cooking lessons.

Chocolate frosting is finished in few minutes, but since chocolate become hard very quickly, make sure to spread it quickly on the cake. Refrigerate it at least one hour before you cut it.
