Why the Cooking Apron is Popular Again

Back in the 1960s, no self-respecting parent would dream of trying to do anything in the kitchen without first putting on a cooking apron. In those days it wasn’t cheap to buy clothes or keep them clean, so it was madness not to protect them when working in the kitchen. But by the end of that decade things had changed. The cooking apron had begun to symbolise the downtrodden housewife. All of a sudden, being tied to apron strings was no longer cool.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Everyone is watching cooking shows on TV before heading into their refitted kitchens to try out their new-found cooking skills. And TV chefs wear cooking aprons. Once again, the kitchen apron, that enemy of the new woman, is in vogue in a big way. If we want to feel like a “master chef”, all we have to do is put an apron on. What we cook when we wear our cooking aprons is another matter entirely, of course (it all looks so much easier on TV, doesn’t it). Read the rest of this entry »

Cast iron cookware is not a thing of the past; it is actually an item that is used by many cooks and homemakers on a daily basis. The cookware that is made of cast iron has many benefits. It conducts heat very well; it heats the food evenly and thoroughly and can even be resistant to foods sticking to it. The cookware is only resistant to foods sticking if it has been seasoned well and not allowed to become unseasoned. If you have never used this type of cookware, you might be pleasantly surprised what can be done with it and just how well it cooks the foods you love. Read the rest of this entry »

Now the evenings are closing in, its time for the barbeque to step down and the croc pot to take over. Invented by the Crock-Pot company, the croc pot, or slow cooker, uses very little power to cook food over a period of several hours. Because the ingredient never boil, food becomes tender without losing any of its natural flavour or nutritional value. This is a piece of cookware that is excellent for preparing rich stews. The length of cooking time is ideal for complex dishes that rely on binding diverse flavours. And modern croc pots are ultra-economical. Read the rest of this entry »

Buying Coffee for Your One Cup Coffee Maker

When brewing your own coffee from how, you don’t have the benefit of a corporate hand stepping in with all the information and pre-taste tested knowledge that you don’t have. Not to say that Starbucks has the greatest coffee in the world, but they’ve tested it and it sells in thousands of locations all over the globe. You just ask for a cup of coffee and they know what they’re doing, for the most part.

yummy desserts and recipes single cup coffee maker Starbucks CoffeeWhen you get your new single cup coffee maker home or fire up your old espresso machine, you’ll be wondering what exactly you should go and buy to get the most out of it. You could always go the cheap route and stop at your local Starbucks and grab their brew of the season, but how often is blindly trusting Starbucks a good idea? No, you’ll want a basic idea of where to start; what you’re getting, where to get it, and how much to get.

First off, don’t buy too much coffee. Try buying in bulk first and going for as small an amount as you can. If you have a grinder, all the better; just buy enough to brew a cup or two and give it a shot. If you do this with a few different varieties, you’ll have a general idea in no time.

Know where you’re going. If you stop at the local grocery store, you may or may not get the kind of options you’re looking for. It depends on the size of the store honestly, but if you go to a specialty grocery store, a Whole Foods or Fred Meyer, where options are what make their brand name so important, you’ll find a huge array of different coffees.

yummy desserts and recipes Coffee beansDon’t be afraid to try the canned stuff. Folgers and friends don’t have to be all bad for everyone. There are some people out there who are perfectly happy with their standard coffee bought in a four month tin can. But, don’t buy a tin and stick with it. Give yourself some options by trying the better stuff too. You might find that you like the price of one but the taste of the other. Now, alternate a bit and give yourself a treat every now and then.

Try some gourmet coffee like those Starbucks and Tully’s brand coffees. They’re not all gems, but occasionally a special blend (I personally enjoy the Starbucks Christmas blend) arrives that will sit well. If you fall for something seasonal, you may want to back up your supply by picking a few extra up before it’s out of stock.

The act of brewing coffee at home is a liberating one for the avid coffee drinker. You’re left with the options to try what you want, when you want, without a corporation telling you what is “in” this season. Take advantage of it and you just might find that perfect blend of at home coffee.

Morelli’s ice cream parlour at Harrods in London is famous around the world for it’s innovative and creative ice creams.

Gino Soldan has worked there for 18 years and is absolutely passionate about ice cream. However he rarely gives interviews to the press so it was something of a coup to get him to agree to talk about his work.

The following quotes come from the excellent ice-cream-recipes blog.

Gino believes that ice cream is not just a dessert and explained how he was already experimenting with unusual ice cream flavors several years ago. He produced a number of new ice creams combining savoury and sweet flavors which proved very popular. These included:

Pear ice cream with Gorgonzola
parmesan and honey ice cream
feta cheese and yellow pepper cream – to be served with a grilled vegetable platter
olive ice cream – to be served with a cheese platter
tomato sorbet – to be served with gazpacho soup

Gino then prepared a number of new flavours to reflect a typically British menu. Flavours one doesn’t usually associate with ice cream.

Yorkshire Pudding Ice Cream
Sausage and Mash Ice Cream
Pork Pie Ice Cream
Cheddar Cheese Ice Cream
Cornish Pasty Ice Cream
Clotted Cream Ice Cream
Lancashire Hotpot Ice Cream
Eccles Cake Ice Cream
Worcestershire Sauce Ice Cream
Haggis Ice Cream
Shortbread Ice Cream
Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps Ice Cream
Black Pudding Ice Cream
Stottie Cake Ice Cream
Haslet Ice Cream
Red Leicester Cheese Ice Cream
Wensleydale Cheese flavoured ice cream

Arbroath Smokie Ice Cream
Welsh Rarebit Ice Cream
Kendal Mint Cake Ice Cream

You can read the full article on the ice cream recipes blog.

Once in Harrods there is so much more to see and do than enjoying the pleasures of Gino’s ice cream creations. Harrods has over 1 million square feet of selling space and over 330 departments. So that should allow plenty of opportunity for window shopping :-)

Kids are frequently fascinated with cooking, sometimes at a very young age. This attraction can be encouraged with all the realistic play cooking toys available, paired with a great imagination.

Many popular toy maker brands have created miniature kitchens with plastic versions of many kitchen staples. You’ll see just about anything, from frying pans to kettles, and condiments to hamburgers. Pretending to cook is a great learning experience for little ones who enjoy the culinary arts in their mini kitchens.

yummy dessrts and recipes teaching kids to cookThe easiest way for kids to get cooking is to start with an Easy Bake oven. Just ask generations of little girls who dreamed of creating a host of tasty and sugary delights right in their bedrooms or play houses. Helping out with dinner preparations was more fun than work. Actually, cooking was fast and easy with the additional helpers. There was no shortage of ways to help out, and if you were baking goodies you always got to lick the spoon.

Lots of kids like to play around in the kitchen occasionally. But there are some who develop a true aptitude early on for the culinary arts. Well beyond the ability to sprinkle coloured sugar on top of iced cookies.

It can be fun and easy for these little cooks to learn how to prepare different foods. They are often interested in the whole meal, and not just dessert. Who knows, they might get more pleasure out of learning to cook than they do from playing video games.

Many of the cookbooks and videos that are hitting the shelves nowadays are geared towards children with lots of fun and easy to cook recipes. It might come as a surprise, but not all of these tasty recipes are loaded with sugary and fattening ingredients.

Let your child plan the dinner menu one night, and play the assistant to your little chef. You could be pleasantly surprised when you find out that many of these recipes are quite healthy.

It’s essential that you are very aware of what your kids are up to in the kitchen. A sturdy step stool may be better than a chair when they want to be able to see over the counter. An adult needs to be in charge when dishes and pans are placed in the oven and when they’re removed, and also when anything’s being cooked on the stove top.

Teach your kids about the possible dangers of the kitchen. They not only need to know safety procedures, they must be taught what to do when an accident causes injury. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to your kids’ safety in the kitchen.
